



Barbara Jones
Presiding Justice, Court of Appeal, First Appellate District, Division 5.
Appointed and confirmed as Presiding Justice of Division 5 of the First District, Court of Appeal in 1998 and Associate Justice of Division 5 in 1996. Appointed Judge of the San Francisco Superior Court in January, 1992. Reelected in November, 1992. Served in the Superior Court civil and criminal divisions, and as Judge of the Appellate Department of the Superior Court.
Awarded BA degree from Duke University, 1965, and JD degree from University of San Francisco, School of Law, 1974. Member of the University of San Francisco Law Review and McAuliffe Society, the academic honor society.
Appointed by the California Supreme Court to its Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics, pursuant to the voter-approved Proposition 190, to develop a new Code of Ethics for California judges. (1995-1996.) Reappointed to the Supreme Court's Advisory Committee for the revision of the judicial ethics canons, 1998 and 2002 to the present.
Member of the Appellate Mediation Task Force appointed by the Chief Justice to develop and conduct the First Appellate District's program for mandatory mediation of civil appeals. (1997 - present)
Member of the Judicial Council's Advisory Committee of Civil and Small Claims (1995-1996) and the Judicial Council's Task Force on Complex Civil Litigation. (1997-1999).
Faculty member and Planning Committee member for California Center for Judicial Education and Research, Civil Law and Procedure Institutes, (1992, 1995; Chairwoman of the 1996 Planning Committee).
Justice Jones was honored by the National Association of Women Lawyers in 2003 with its President's Award in recognition of her work in judicial ethics, and by the San Francisco Trial Lawyers Association in 2005 as Appellate Justice of the Year.
For over sixteen years, Justice Jones practiced civil litigation, emphasizing general business and personal injury matters. President (1983) and Lifetime Member of Queen's Bench, women's bar association of the San Francisco Bay Area. Officer and member of the alumni association Board of Governors, University of San Francisco, School of Law, (1975-1985, President-1984).
Born March 20, 1943 in Plainfield, New Jersey; Pre-law experience: elementary school teacher and editor of social studies textbooks; executive secretary of U.S. Congressman. Interests: gardening and road cycling.
