  • Born February 19, 1943, Los Angeles, California.
  • Married to Diane L. Hastings since January 27, 1968; two adult children.

EDUCATION:

  • Undergraduate: University of Southern California. Awarded Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, July, 1968.
  • Law School - Southwestern University School of Law, Los Angeles, California. Awarded Juris Doctor, Magna Cum Laude, May, 1972.
  • Served on the Southwestern University Law Review as Notes and Comments Editor 1970/1971, and Editor-In-Chief 1971/1972.

LAW PRACTICE:

Admitted to the California Bar and the U. S. District Court, Central District in December 1972. Practiced with Belcher, Henzie & Biegenzahn specializing in civil trials from 1972-1985.

JUDICIAL POSITIONS:

  • Judge: Los Angeles County Superior Court: 10/1/85-9/21/93. General trial departments for the years 1985-1988 and 1991-1993, presiding over civil, criminal and family law matters. Supervising Judge for the Southwest District Court, Torrance, California 1989-1990, presiding over Law and Motion, Master Trial Calendar, Probate, and Ex-Parte matters, including Domestic Violence Restraining Orders.
  • Justice: California Court of Appeal, Second District, Division Four, 9/22/93 to present.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:

Adjunct Professor of Law: Southwestern University School of Law 1973-1977; California Judges Association 1986 to present (service on Civil Law & Procedure Committee, Chair 1994, and the Appellate Courts Committee); Member of the American Judicature Society; Member of the Judicial Council Court Technology Task Force 1994; Chair of the Court Technology Committee, an advisory committee to the Judicial Council, January, 1995 to December, 1996; member of the California Advisory Committee on Publication of the Official Reports, 1995 to 1997; Instructor for California Center for Judicial Education and Research (CJER), 1995 to present; founding member of The Honorable Benjamin Aranda III Inn of Court, a chapter of the American Inns of Court.

AWARDS:

  • The Honorable William E. MacFaden Award for Dedicated Service to the Bench and Bar, South Bay Bar Association, 1999.
  • Outstanding Judicial Officer, Southwestern University School of Law 1995.
  • Trial Judge of the Year, Los Angeles Trial Lawyers Association, 1993.
