2. What is the filing fee required for civil briefs or writs?

Rule 1, CRC, provides that a filing fee of $655 is required for civil appeals and the Government Code requires a $655 filing fee for petitions for writ which are strictly civil in nature. Checks should be made payable to "Clerk, Court of Appeal". If the appellant is indigent, fees may be waived by appropriate motion to this court or in the lower court if the clerk transmits a copy of the order excusing payment. See rule 985. Certain types of cases are exempt: juvenile cases, cases in which a governmental entity is the appellant, petitions to review an order of the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board, civil writs arising from criminal cases.
