Petitioning for Review in the Supreme Court
Q: What is a petition for review?
A: Except in certain cases, the California Constitution affords no right to appeal to the Supreme Court; review by the Supreme Court is a matter of discretion. A petition for review is the first step in an appeal to the Supreme Court, and consists of a party’s request to the court to select his or her case for consideration. By contrast, a party’s brief on the merits is a separate document, usually filed after the court grants a petition for review.
