Humboldt County is located along the coast in northwestern California. The county is situated in the heart of the coastal redwood region, with a population of approximately 125,000. The county covers an area of nearly 2.6 million acres (4,053 square miles) composed mostly of range and timberland. It is a land of misty beaches, towering redwoods, mountains, and swift rivers, with a variety of climates and terrain. Coastal Humboldt is wild and mostly rocky; inland is warmer and mountainous. Major industries are fishing, wood products, and tourism. Recreational areas include hundreds of streams and lakes as well as thousands of acres of county, state, and national parks. Eureka, the county seat, is located on the coast. The mission of the Superior Court of California, County of Humboldt is to provide for the resolution of disputes and enforcement of our laws in a manner appropriate to the needs of our community and society. The Superior Court of California, County of Humboldt has seven judges and one commissioner. One judge and the commissioner are typically assigned to Family and Juvenile, one judge to Civil, five judges to Criminal and other cases as may be assigned, and one judge and one half-time visiting judge to Traffic and Small Claims. The Superior Court of California, County of Humboldt has a Presiding Judge, Assistant Presiding Judge, Court Executive Officer, and 76 court staff.
