State Court Leaders to Focus on Building Public Trust and Confidence

Annual Judicial Administration Conference To Be Held in San Francisco January
26-29

San Francisco — Nearly 400 presiding judges, court administrators, and leaders from the state’s trial and appellate courts will meet in San Francisco January 26–29, 2000, at the California Judicial Administration Conference.  The focus of the state judicial system’s foremost educational event will be, “Twenty-first Century Courts–A Future Built on Trust and Confidence.”

Chief Justice Ronald M. George and Administrative Director of the Courts William C. Vickrey will present opening remarks.  Judge Roger Warren, director of the National Center for State Courts, will report on the activities of the National Conference on Public Trust and Confidence and the resulting national action plan.

Keynote Speakers

Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore Fred Keeley and others will hold an interactive session about legislative and executive relations.  Other speakers will include Dr. Arthur Lange, a strategic planning consultant, who will discuss leadership in times of severe competition and rapid change; Dr. Richard Schroth, an expert on emerging technologies in major corporations, who will outline the most important developing technologies; and Dennis Maloney, Director of the Deschutes County (Oregon) Department of Community Justice, who will discuss adult and juvenile restorative justice programs.

Awards

Two awards luncheons will honor five individuals and eleven courts that have made significant contributions to the justice system. Chief Justice George will present the Ralph N. Kleps Award for the Improvement in the Administration of the Courts on Thursday, January 27 and the Judicial Council Distinguished Service Awards on Friday, January 28.

Workshops

Key topics will be covered in workshops include court improvement initiatives, family courts, public safety in the courts, public education success stories, building partnerships in the community, and hot topics such as elder abuse and hate crimes.  A separate educational track will be held for attendees from appellate courts, focusing on technology in the new millennium and the work of the Appellate Processes Task Force.
