Supreme Court To Hear Oral Arguments in Same-Sex Marriage Cases on May 25

San Francisco—The California Supreme Court today set the oral argument date for the two same-sex marriage cases now pending before the court—Lockyer v. City and County of San Francisco, S122923, and Lewis v. Alfaro, S122865.

Oral arguments in these cases will begin at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25, in the Supreme Court’s Courtroom, Earl Warren Center, Fourth Floor, 350 McAllister Street, San Francisco.  The cases will be heard as part of the court’s regular monthly calendar session from May 24 to May 27, 2004.  One hour will be aside for each case, in accordance with the court’s regular procedures.

The Supreme Court today also approved its calendar for June 1 to June 2, 2004, in Los Angeles.  The official calendars for both months will be released later today and will be posted on the California Court Web site: http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/courts/supreme/

California Channel, a public affairs cable network, will televise live the arguments in the same-sex marriage cases.  For a list of stations that carry this network, see http://www.calchannel.com/carriage.htm .

In addition, arguments will be broadcast in an overflow viewing area in the Milton Marks Conference Center Auditorium, Hiram J. Smith State Office Building, Lower Level, 455 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco.  Pooling arrangements also will be available for the electronic media.  Associated Press has agreed to serve as the pool photographer.
