Commission on Judicial Appointments Announces New Hearing Date for Supreme Court Nominee

San Francisco—The Commission on Judicial Appointments has announced a new date and time for the public hearing previously scheduled for Judge Carlos Moreno, appointed by Governor Gray Davis as Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court.

The public hearing, originally scheduled for October 17, will now be held on Thursday, October 18, 2001, at 10:00 a.m., in the California Supreme Court Courtroom, Fourth Floor, 350 McAllister Street, San Francisco.

Judge Moreno, who serves on the U.S. District Court, Central District of California, was appointed to fill the Supreme Court vacancy created by the death of Associate Justice Stanley Mosk on June 19, 2001.

The state Constitution specifies that a gubernatorial appointment to the Supreme Court or the Court of Appeal is “effective when confirmed by the Commission on Judicial Appointments.”  The members of the commission who will consider the appointment of Judge Moreno are Chief Justice Ronald M. George, Chairperson; Attorney General Bill Lockyer; and Presiding Justice Joan Dempsey Klein, of the Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division Three (Los Angeles), senior presiding justice of the state Courts of Appeal.

New guidelines for the commission were adopted effective May 18, 1999.  These guidelines are published as an appendix to the California Rules of Courts and are available on the California Courts Web site at www.courtinfo.ca.gov/rules/2001/appendix/appdiv4.pdf.  The guidelines also are available by calling the Office of Communications of the Administrative Office of the Courts at (415) 865-7740.
