Court Appointed Counsel Study and DRAFT (Dependency Representation, Administration, Funding & Training) Program Project

The Dependency Quick Guide
The Dependency Quick Guide was developed by the Administrative Office of the Courts, Center for Families, Children & the Courts, as a reference manual for attorneys representing parents and children in juvenile dependency proceedings. The book is divided into three major sections: Hearings, Fact Sheets, and Summaries of Seminal Cases. Also included are checklists, black letter discussion, and tips to assist you in your practice.

Juvenile Dependency Hearings Course
(This course has been designed by the Center for Judicial Education and Research division of the Administrative Office of the Courts in order to train judicial officers who hear California Juvenile Dependency Cases.)

Juvenile Dependency: The Video Game is designed to provide attorneys with a virtual idea of what it is like to function as an attorney who represents parents and children in juvenile dependency cases. This day-in-the-life experience takes the user through three levels: the Interview room, the Courtroom and the Office. At each level, the attorney is met with challenges typically faced by attorneys each day. Depending upon a player's answers and choices, the player can earn points, be promoted or burn out and quit. Playing the entire game will earn an attorney two (2) hours of MCLE credit.

To receive a copy of the video game, please contact Angela Duldulao at angela.duldulao@jud.ca.gov or (415) 865-4563.

Substance Abuse: The Web of Addiction
This one-hour video presentation is designed to introduce attorneys to the relationship between substance abuse and juvenile dependency practice. The video features a treatment-based documentary entitled "Web of Addiction," which is paused frequently by a roundtable panel of juvenile dependency experts who relate the lessons from the video to California's juvenile dependency system. This video can be viewed with Windows Media Player.

What Juvenile Dependency Attorneys Need to Know about Basic Child Development
This 30 minute video presentation is designed to teach attorneys how to approach issues relating to child development while handling juvenile dependency cases. Hosted by the Honorable Patricia Bresee, the video is done in a game show format, where contestants hear hypothetical situations and then guess at the root cause of the presenting problems. A panel of expert attorneys and social workers then appear to provide the correct answers. This video can be viewed with Windows Media Player.
