Delinquency Events and Education Beyond the Bench Conferences. Beyond the Bench is an annual, multidisciplinary conference that brings together juvenile dependency and delinquency professionals, including judicial officers, court administrators, child welfare professionals, public defenders, district attorneys, probation officers, educators, mental health professionals, and service providers from many of California's 58 counties to learn about the latest research and best practices to improve juvenile justice and child abuse and neglect proceedings. The conference is held every December. Click here for reports and resources from previous Beyond the Bench conferences. Juvenile Court Centennial Conference. In December 2003, a statewide conference to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the juvenile court in California took place in Los Angeles, the site of the first juvenile court in California. The conference was cosponsored by the Center for Families, Children & the Courts and the Los Angeles Juvenile Court. Conference presentations covered both dependency and delinquency issues as well as family violence and other crossover issues. The Centennial conference took place instead of the Beyond the Bench conference in 2003. Click here for reports and resources from the Centennial Conference. Transfer of Knowledge
Symposium: Protocols in Juvenile Court for Dual Status Children. Teams
from 27 California counties came together in June 2005 in San Francisco
to discuss improving the handling of cases in which delinquency and dependency
intersect and to help increase access to appropriate resources and services
for children in a holistic and timely manner. Attendees met in county
teams consisting of the juvenile court presiding judge, chief probation
officer, and child welfare director, along with other key stakeholders
in the juvenile justice system.
Juvenile Delinquency and the Courts Conference 2002: Building a Better Future. The 2002 conference built on the success of the 2001 event (described below) and focused on sharing the successes of various juvenile justice programs and also the perspective of youths who participated in the juvenile justice system. The 2002 conference provided the existing county teams with an opportunity to meet as a group, attend educational workshops, and refine their "action plans" to improve the juvenile justice system in their county. Click here for reports and resources from the 2002 Delinquency Conference. Juvenile Delinquency
and the Courts Conference: 2001. The 2001 Conference brought together
teams of juvenile justice professionals from 54 of the 58 California counties
with the unique goal of creating local juvenile justice teams with "action
plans" to improve their local system for handling juvenile cases.
The Impact and Results of Juvenile Delinquency Team Action Planning report
is an independent evaluation conducted to determine the effect of the
conference in promoting systemic change in California counties.
