Continuing Education for Court Professionals

Training

Up to 92 hours of accredited continuing education and training are offered each year to professional staff and supervisors who provide services to children and families at California's family, probate, and juvenile courts. These sessions are also open to family law judges, commissioners, and court administrators.

Mandated Program
The Center for Families, Children & the Courts (CFCC) provides a continuing education program that is legislatively mandated for those engaged in court-connected child custody mediation and evaluation. The goal of the continuing education program is to offer state-of-the-art training designed specifically for professionals serving children and families in the courts. Training requirements are defined in the Family Code and are set forth in standards of practice and rules of court established by the Judicial Council and the Legislature.

Education Institutes
The following education institutes and materials are offered:

  • The Institute for New Court Professionals, held each summer;
  • Regional Training Institutes, two days each, held in four regions each fall;
  • The Statewide Educational Institute, in partnership with the Center for Judicial Education and Research's Family Law Institute, lasting three days each spring;

Diverse Courses Offered
These programs provide courses each year in domestic violence, legislative and case law, techniques for alternative dispute resolution skills, child abuse update, interviewing children, child development, substance and alcohol abuse, cultural competency, and model and innovative programs. In addition to training conferences, extensive audiotape, videotape, and reading materials are available.
