5-Step to Planning Model: Step One

ENABLING COMMUNITY FOCUS

COMMUNITY FOCUS: DEFINITION

Establishing a community focus in court planning requires that planning teams be (1) inclusive, representing the diverse blend of perspectives on the role and operation of the local courts deemed necessary by local conditions (e.g., demographics) and circumstances (e.g., business development), and (2) active in building a sense of community among team members and with members of the public.

COMMUNITY FOCUS: BENEFITS

Inclusiveness and a sense of community among team members and with stakeholders of the county courts ensure that the planning process includes the public as a full partner.

COMMUNITY FOCUS: PROCESS

To ensure that both the team and the people involved in the county-wide planning effort experience a sense of community and effectively maintain a community focus, it is important that they:

  • Consider the extent to which necessary perspectives are represented on the local team and make plans for the inclusion of any "missing" perspectives;

  • Understand the concepts and rationales associated with building a sense of community and the role of community in accomplishing team aims;

  • Develop a shared language for thinking and speaking about sense of community; and

  • Learn about and use community investment behaviors as part of team meeting and outreach activities.
