Second Chances, Better Lives
Drug courts have proven to be successful alternatives to incarceration for people convicted of drug-related offenses. The collaboration of community-based organizations, individual counselors, public agencies, and court staff has resulted in programs that reduce the arrest, conviction, and incarceration rate of drug court participants. Participants who successfully complete drug court programs not only improve their own lives, but also the lives of their families and communities.
California’s first drug court began in Oakland in 1993 and led to the creation of 158 drug courts in 50 counties throughout the state. For many of the drug court graduates, the completion of a substance abuse treatment program marks a new beginning. Past actions are forgiven, charges are dismissed and, in many cases, family relations are renewed.
In recognition of National Drug Court Month, California's drug court coordinators present this photo exhibit to celebrate all those who have made drug courts a success--the courts, counselors, law enforcement and, most importantly, drug court participants and their families.

San Joaquin County Drug Court alumni and staff host a spring picnic and Easter basket giveaway for drug court participants and their children at Victory Park in Stockton. Many drug courts try to hold family-oriented events to help strengthen community and family bonds.
