Court Administration: Model Jury Summons Project

On the recommendation of a blue ribbon commission, the Judicial Council charged a task force with producing a standardized one-step jury summons for optional use throughout the state. The task force researched the varied one-step summonses already in use and collected input from focus groups. It then developed a model summons that was piloted in several courts in 2003 and rolled out to more courts in 2004 and 2005:

  • The model summons is easy to read and has a simple, clean design.
  • Introductory information on the court system, which once occupied space in some summonses, was moved to a separate pamphlet.
  • Each court can adapt the model summons to fit its local situation.

The Jury Summons task force worked with design and communications consultants to develop and refine drafts of the model summons and the juror information pamphlet.
