Statewide Administration: Senate Bill 56 and the Need for New Judgeships

Associate Justice Brad R. Hill from the Court of Appeal, Fifth Appellate District swears in Judge Arlan L. Harrell, a new judge.
California is suffering from a severe shortage of trial court judgeships. The ramifications are serious and far-reaching, and include compromised public safety; decreased access to the courts; an unstable business climate; and enormous backlogs that inhibit fair, timely, and equitable justice. Senate Bill 56 (Dunn) addressed the critical shortage of judgeships. Sponsored by the Judicial Council, SB 56 was introduced to create 150 new judicial positions, with priority for the courts with the greatest need.
