You are here: Families & Children > Custody & Visitation > Supervised Visitation Information > Why can supervised visitation help in cases where there is or has been domestic violence?
Domestic violence involves the exercise of power and control over a person (an intimate partner) and often gets worse when the couple separates, because the abuser tries to regain control. Courts rely on supervised visitation services in cases involving domestic violence. While supervised visitation is not a guarantee of safety for family members, it can offer parents an important option for enhancing safety for their children when contact with one parent presents a potential risk of harm to either the child or the parent.
In cases where there are allegations of sexual abuse, Standard 5.20(k) requires supervised visitation providers to comply with additional terms and conditions to help keep children safe and protected during visitation. In addition, the California Professional Society on the Abuse of Children has developed guidelines for sexual abuse cases for monitored visitation services. Click here to read those guidelines.
