What happens if my child goes to juvenile hall?
The probation officer will decide if your child must stay locked up. The officer may just let your child go home. Or the officer can let your child go home and send the case to the district attorney. The district attorney will decide to file a petition or not.
If your child stays locked up, the district attorney will file a petition. This usually happens within 2 days after the arrest. Your child will have a detention hearing on the next day the court is open. The court is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.
