My Child Was Taken Away From Me; Where Will He or She Go?

If your child was taken away from you:

• Your child can be put on probation. He or she may have to live in with a relative, in a group home, or in an institution.
• Your child can be put on probation and sent to a probation camp or ranch.
• Your child can be sent to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Division of Juvenile Justice (also called "DJJ"). If your child is tried in adult court, he or she will be sent to the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Division of Adult Operations (also called "CDC").

If your child is sent to the California Youth Authority, he or she will go to a "reception center" for the first 30 to 90 days. The center will find out what education and treatment your child needs. Then your child will go a correctional facility or youth camp.

These are the reception centers:

• The Southern Youth Correctional Reception Center and Clinic in Norwalk (1-562-868-9979)
• The Ventura Youth Correctional Facility (1-805-485-7951)

You can visit your child on Saturdays or Sundays for 2 to 3 hours. It depends on the reception center. The Ventura center lets you visit for 6-1/2 hours. You can't call your child, but you can write letters. Your child can call you collect from a pay phone.
