What is guardianship?

Guardianship is a court proceeding in which a judge gives someone who is not the parent:

  • custody of a child, or
  • the power to manage the child's property (called "estate"), or
  • both.

The information in this section is about Probate Guardianships.

But, if Child Protective Services (CPS) is involved in your case, you probably have to go to the juvenile court to find out what you can do. Click here to find out more about juvenile court.
