Filing Court Papers by Mail

Can I file my papers by mail?

In most cases, you can. Call the court clerk to make sure you can file by mail for your kind of case.

Caution! Some cases, like restraining orders and evictions have very tight deadlines. If you file by mail, you may miss the deadline.

How do I know what to send when I file by mail?

Call the court clerk at your local court. To contact your local court, click here.

Ask the clerk:

  • How many copies you have to include with your original documents,
  • The amount of the filing fee and the payment methods they accept,
  • The court address, and
  • If you need to include a self-addressed envelope with enough stamps on it so the clerk can send the filed documents back to you.
Also ask if there are any other rules you need to know to file by mail.
