What can the tenant do, if the landlord uses unlawful methods to evict him or her?

The tenant can file a civil lawsuit against the landlord, and ask the court to order the landlord to pay the tenant's actual damages, special damages of at least $250 or up to $100 per day for the time that the landlord used the unlawful methods, and any attorney fees that the tenant had to pay if he or she hired a lawyer to handle the lawsuit. (See California Civil Code, section 789.3.)
