How is an unlawful detainer lawsuit started?

To start an unlawful detainer lawsuit, the landlord must file an unlawful detainer complaint, have the court issue a summons, and have a third party serve the tenant a copy of the complaint and the summons. Formal service of the summons and complaint is known as "Service of Process," and it must be completed before the court will take any action on the landlord's request to evict the tenant.
